Military personnel:
Birth certificate and permission to marry
Issued by the Commander from the military.
All: If applicable, evidence of the termination of any previous
marriage such as final divorce decree, annulment decree or
death certificate.
If under 18, Sworn Statement by parents or legal guardian
consenting to the marriage.
To do in Usa:
All documents must be translated into Italian.
"Apostille" stamp on all translated documents for
legalized use in Italy. This is required by the Hague Convention
for the international legalization of public documents.
In the US, an "Apostille" stamp is given in the
State where the document was originally issued by the Secretary
of State.
These documents will be valid for 6 months from the date of
issue. Make sure that all documents submitted to Italian authorities
have not been issued more than six months ahead of the wedding.
Atto Notorio -- obtain this from an Italian Consul in the
United States before leaving for Italy.
This is a declaration, sworn to by two witnesses before an
Italian Consul, that according to US laws, there is no obstacle
(nulla osta)to the citizens marriage. In Italy an appointment
should be arranged in advance. A fee is charged.
To do in Italy:
Declaration (Nulla Osta) sworn to by the US citizen at US
Consulate stating that there is no legal impediment to his/her
marriage under Italian law and US Law. After obtaining the
Nulla Osta from the Consulate, it must be taken to the Prefecture
to be authenticated (legalized), as described below.
Authentication (legalization) of this declaration by the Legalization
office of any Prefecture in any capital city. A waiver for
any woman divorced within the last 300 days from the Procura
della Republica (District Attorney), which is issued on presentation
of a medical certificate that she is not pregnant.

To Do
in Britain:
First, you must publish the Banns at your local registry
office in England, which will release a Certificate of Non
Impediment after 23 days. Documents are valid for only 6
months.
To Bring to Italy:
Original Birth Certificates, including names of both parents.
Valid Passports. A Certificate of Non Impediment, in order
for a sworn statement (Nulla Osta) to be done at the British
Consulate
Divorce Decree Absolute, if you are divorced.
To Do in Italy:
Bring to British consulate The Certificate of Non Impediment
Original Birth Certificates
Valid Passports
Consulate fee of £70.
The Consulate will release the necessary documents for you
to marry after 2 days.

Australians
wishing to marry in Italy need a Certificate of No Impediment.
Certificates and documents should not be done more than
6 months prior to intended wedding date.
The following four conditions must be satisfied:
both parties must be 18 years or over;
both parties must be free to marry in the first place;
true consent must exist, i.e. not forced to marry;
the relationship must not be a prohibited one, e.g. father
and daughter.
Documents
for Certificate of No Impediment (Nulla Osta)
Completion of an Application for Certificate of No Impediment
to Marriage form, witnessed by a Justice of the Peace, a
Consular official at an Australian Diplomatic Mission overseas,
or an officer of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
Birth Certificate or other evidence of nationality and birth
date.
Divorce Decree Absolute or Death Certificate if either party
is divorced or widowed
A waiver for any woman divorced within the last 300 days,
obtained from the Procura della Republica (District Attorney),
which is issued on presentation of a medical certificate
that she is not pregnant.
There are fees for the Nulla Osta and for its witnesses.
Present the legalized Nulla Osta to the Marriage Office
of the Municipality, which we will do for you.

Church
weddings*
*For a couple never previously married.
If you
have been divorced and your marriage was not officially
annulled, you cannot marry in the Catholic Church. Certificates
and documents should not be done more than 6 months prior
to intended wedding date.
Documents:
Formal letter on church letterhead from your parish priest
stating that you have fulfilled all PRE CANA procedures
and granting permission for the wedding.
A letter from the Archbishop or Vicar of the parish stating
the same- your priest can obtain this for you.
ALL certificates of baptism, first communion and confirmation
must be sent together.
Original of the marriage encounter with church seals/signatures
(they issue a form). This original is not just the certificate
but a type of signed questionnaire.
Seals or stamps from the parish office so that everything
looks correct.
Catholic weddings in Italy can only take place by the priest's
permission after he has seen the paperwork.
